Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning is a continuous journey of personal and professional growth that enriches our lives and keeps our minds engaged. It goes beyond formal education, embracing the pursuit of knowledge and skills throughout all stages of life. This commitment to learning fosters a sense of balance, as it helps us adapt to change, stay relevant in an ever-evolving world, and maintain a healthy curiosity.

Moreover, lifelong learning is a powerful source of inspiration, driving us to explore new ideas, challenge our perspectives, and connect more deeply with our passions and the world around us. By embracing lifelong learning, we not only expand our horizons but also cultivate a life of purpose and fulfillment.

This spring, after completing a less-than-enjoyable work contract, I decided to dedicate some time to “lifelong learning” through professional development – and more specifically, to the foundations of digital communications strategy and social media in the age of AI. As part of that learning journey at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies, I had the pleasure of virtually meeting and learning from approximately 40 students led by an effervescent and accomplished writer, illustrator, and instructor, Alison Garwood-Jones. Over the course of 12 weeks, we explored several methodologies and tools associated with the digital marketing and communications industry, including several emerging AI technologies that are likely to play an influential role in the future of content marketing as well as most other industries.

As part of the class, I joined forces with two other classmates to create a video that explored the existential topic of “What is Art?”. This was a brand new experience for me using Canva, a technology with which I had no former experience. It also required significant planning and preparation for “show time” on July 9, given that my teammates and I were in three different countries with three different time zones – Canada, the United States, and United Arab Emirates! While challenging, it was the perfect way to demonstrate the use of various digital communications technologies. Attached here is the final outcome of our efforts:

In addition, as part of the class, I assumed the role of “citizen journalist” to cover a live event, the Oakville Artisans Market on July 27, by keeping the public informed through a series of social media posts. Attached below are some of the pictures I took that day, along with a compilation of Twitter posts on Wakelet – two additional applications I had not used before!

While taking this course was simply one step along my professional journey, the experience has reinforced how important it is to be curious and adaptable in this ever-changing world. The pursuit of knowledge is indeed a lifelong endeavor – one that continually shapes and enhances the way we connect with the world and with each other.
