There are those who love winter, and those (like me) who do not. Here are some helpful ways to beat the winter blues, while awaiting the warm yet elusive embrace of spring.
Get Outside
While it might seem logical to simply stay indoors and hibernate, it helps to bundle up and get outside for some fresh air and sunshine. Studies have shown that a lack of sunshine especially during the winter months can contribute to a vitamin D deficiency, which in turn can contribute to low mood and depression. Spending long periods of time indoors can also contribute to feelings of isolation. So grab your coat and head outdoors. You can return to that comfy couch, with a hot cup of cocoa, after that brisk and invigorating walk, skate, or toboggan ride.
Make a Plan
I have always found it helpful to make a plan, broken down into small achievable goals (see 11 Insightful Tips for YOUR BEST NEW YEAR). Being productive can definitely help to fend off those winter blues. You might try tackling an indoor project that you’ve been putting off ‘for a rainy day’. Not only will it feel good to have completed it, you won’t have it hanging over your head once spring and summer seasons arrive. And don’t worry, they will.
Learn Something New
Challenge yourself to learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, or supplement your education. Occupying the mind and body with a new challenge can be really invigorating, and can also help to maintain your focus on the positive things in your life.
Plan a Trip
Nothing brightens the spirit like a winter get-away. If you have the means, and ability, chase the sunshine and bring a little back with you. But even if you are not able to travel right away, planning a short trip or visit to family can help keep you focused on the future and prevent you from dwelling on the impending snowstorms outside.
Eat Well and Exercise
Although these things are always important, they are particularly important if you find yourself susceptible to low mood during the winter months. Taking good care of your physical self will help to keep your mind healthy too.
Reduce Screen Time
As tempting as it may be, try not to spend inordinate amounts of time in front of your tv, computer, iPhone, or tablet. Interacting ‘live’ with the important people in your life will lift your spirits more than any Apple product can.
Call your mother. Take your wife out to lunch. Go skiing with your kids. Reconnect over coffee with that old college friend or work colleague. You will be better off emotionally for having made the investment.
Talk to Your Doctor
While these tips have generally worked well for me, they are not meant to be a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please don’t suffer in silence. It is important to talk to your family doctor, if you feel you may be suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). He or she will be able to provide additional recommendations and resources for alleviating your symptoms.
